The Scoop!

  • Pre swims, pre rides & runs!
  • Beautiful park setting at Robious Landing Park in Chesterfield County right on the James River
  • Best first timer's open water sprint tri because you swim downstream with the current! Bike is an "L" shaped course, has a few hills, one good climb, then fly on the way home. Run is fun & unique, 70% trail, cool bridges, trail parallels the river in parts, basically flat with some tiny grades, very wooded, a mental break from road running, with turns and switch backs. You will not be bored!
  • Post race BBQ is provided by our title sponsor the Tavern Restaurant with vegan options as well. Come by the Tavern Restaurant for lunch or dinner Fri, Sat, or Sun meet owner Chris Danahy, 19 time IM finisher.  Thank you Chris for giving back and supporting the sport in Richmond!  The Tavern has owned the race title for 7 years! They are proud to be serving local craft beers!
  • So many race options: individual, relay, clydesdale, athena, student, and aquabike divisions
  • Be ready to recycle at all RMS races.
  • Pre race briefing is for first timers, triathletes that have not raced this course before, and open to the public for newbies.
  • See Swim description to learn about TRIgirl/TRIquest Swim Angel Crew
  • Things to do in Richmond for out of towners

Swim : Swim Course Map - 650m  (Thank you Stone Harbor neighborhood!)

This is a 650 meter course.  Athletes will walk up to the access ramp located in the Stone Harbor neighborhood.  This is a gracious private boat ramp and they allow the race to use the ramp only on race day, it is locked on every other day.  Shoe/flip flop buckets will be available and returned to the awards area by RMS staff. The TRIgirl/TRIquest Swim Angel Crew is made up of experienced swimmers who swim next to an assigned race participant. Swim Angels act as a "guide" offering encouragement, support and a calming presence to race participants. Special needs swim caps are available at packet pick up upon request. Swim Angels are NOT expected to offer rescues during a race, to learn more click here. The swim cutoff time is 30 minutes.  Be careful at the swim exit, there are rocks there that cannot be removed. Volunteers there to assist.

Bike : Bike Course Map

The 18.8 mile bike is on rural roads heading west toward 288 and Powhatan. Racers will make a lefthand turn on Manakintown Ferry Rd. after the church. This very nice and lowly populated road has 2 gradual climbs. The hill climb on Manakintown is substantial (3 percent and is just under 1.7 miles in length. The elevation change is approximately 194 ft) and you will need to train for it or walk it. It is very ridable, up to you. The midway point on the course is a U-turn just before Page Rd.  You fly back down then make a right turn back onto Robious Rd (Huguenot trail). There is no bottle handoff on the bike.

Run : Run Course Map

The run is a basically flat 5k on shady trails through Robious Landing Park along the James River. You will run a small portion into the adjoining neighborhood of Riverdowns, a very supportive community of the event.  There will be 2 aid stations on the run course:  one approx .9 mile mark which you will hit coming back and one at the turnaround. You will hit the first one again at the 4-way intersection toward the end.
